Speculative Futures Lab: criticism, aesthetics, and advanced technologies for design.
The Speculative Futures Lab is a line of research at the intersection of contemporary philosophy, technology, and design.
The Speculative Futures Lab conducts transdisciplinary research at the intersection of contemporary design criticism, new paradigms of aesthetics, and technological culture. The research is characterised by a dual nature—theoretical and applied—whose two aspects represent mutually enriching perspectives, continuously opening up new levels of meaning and new imaginaries.
One of its primary objectives is to explore, through practice-based processes, future scenarios for contemporary design and fashion in the realm of manufacturing objects, jewellery, and physical and digital installations.
In terms of tools and methodologies, the SFL works simultaneously on hybrid processes, theoretical and interactive mapping, and speculative devices. The research group's expertise is diverse, including theoretical and critical studies of contemporary phenomena in art, fashion, and design; knowledge of advanced manufacturing software and technologies, post-digital processes, and bio-based and material-focused approaches.
The ultimate goal is to produce a critical investigation of the relationship between technology and nature, between humans and non-humans, reimagining the future in the present.
>> The SFL is a transdisciplinary research line within the SIDE | Sustainable Industrial Design Research Group of the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design at the University of Campania “L. Vanvitelli.”
